About Easter in Malta
Holy Week
Easter is one of the biggest moments of the year in Malta. On Maundy Thursday people visit seven churches (is-Seba' Visti), each with an altar of repose. On Good Friday, towns hold solemn processions with life-size statues of the Passion carried through the streets, accompanied by people in Roman and biblical costume.
Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday the mood flips: in several towns the statue of the Risen Christ is carried at a run through the streets, with bells and band music. Families share figolli, almond-filled pastries shaped like lambs, fish or hearts.
Good to know
- Good Friday processions run in the evening; check your town's route.
- Many shops close on Good Friday.
- Figolli are sold everywhere in the weeks before Easter.
