About Carnival in Malta

Five days before Lent

Carnival (il-Karnival) runs over the long weekend before Ash Wednesday, so the dates move every year with Easter. Valletta and Floriana host the big parades of giant papier-mâché floats and dance groups, with smaller celebrations in towns around the island.

Nadur's spontaneous carnival

In Gozo, Nadur is known for a darker, improvised carnival: costumes made from whatever is at hand, masks, satire and late nights in the village streets. It feels very different from the polished floats in Valletta.

What to eat

Look out for prinjolata, the tall Carnival cake of sponge, cream, pine nuts and chocolate, sold in pastizzerias and bakeries in the weeks before.

Good to know

  • Children wear costumes all week: schools and clubs run their own parties.
  • Parade routes close streets in Valletta and Floriana; arrive early for a spot.
  • Nadur's carnival is late-night and adult in tone.
